Robust isogeometric topology optimization for piezoelectric actuators with uniform manufacturability

摘要: Piezoelectric actuators have received substantial attention among the industry and academia due to quick responses, such as high output force, high stiffness, high accuracy, and precision. However, the design of piezoelectric actuators always suffers from the emergence of several localized hinges with only one-node connection, which have difficulty satisfying manufacturing and machining requirements (from the over- or under-etching devices). The main purpose of the current paper is to propose a robust isogeometric topology optimization (RITO) method for the design of piezoelectric actuators, which can effectively remove the critical issue induced by one-node connected hinges and simultaneously maintain uniform manufacturability in the optimized topologies. In RITO, the isogeometric analysis replacing the conventional finite element method is applied to compute the unknown electro elastic fields in piezoelectric materials, which can improve numerical accuracy and then enhance iterative stability. The erode–dilate operator is introduced in topology representation to construct the eroded, intermediate, and dilated density distribution functions by non-uniform rational B-splines. Finally, the RITO formulation for the design of piezoelectric materials is developed, and several numerical examples are performed to test the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed RITO method.

Nanocrystal technology for drug formulation and delivery

摘要: With the development of modern technology like high throughput screening, combinatorial chemistry and computer aid drug design, the drug discovery process has been dramatically accelerated. However, new drug candidates often exhibit poor aqueous or even organic medium solubility. Additionally, many of them may have low dissolution velocity and low oral bioavailability. Nanocrystal formulation sheds new light on advanced drug development. Due to small (nano- or micro- meters) sizes, the increased surface-volume ratio leads to dramatically enhanced drug dissolution velocity and saturation solubility. The simplicity in preparation and the potential for various administration routes allow drug nanocrystals to be a novel drug delivery system for specific diseases (i.e. cancer). In addition to the comprehensive review of different technologies and methods in drug nanocrystal preparation, suspension, and stabilization, we will also compare nano- and micro-sized drug crystals in pharmaceutical applications and discuss current nanocrystal drugs on the market and their limitations.

Semi-solid materials for controlled release drug formulation: current status and future prospects

摘要: Semi-solid materials represent an important category of inactive ingredients (excipients) of pharmaceutical products. Here we review several common semi-solid polymers currently used in the controlled release formulations of many drugs. These polymers are selected based on their importance and broad scope of application in FDA-approved drug products and include several polysaccharides (cellulose, starch, chitosan, alginate) and carbomers, a group of mucoadhesive synthetic polymers. Glyceride-based polymers used in self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) will also be discussed for its importance in formulating poorly water-soluble drugs. Unique features and advantages of each type of semi-solid materials are discussed and examples of their use in oral delivery of drugs are provided. Finally, future prospects of developing new and better semi-solid excipients are discussed with the objective of facilitating clinical translation.

Implementation of total Lagrangian formulation for the elasto-plastic analysis of plane steel frames

摘要: In this paper, the co-rotational total Lagrangian forms of finite element formulations are derived to perform elasto-plastic analysis for plane steel frames that either experience increasing external loading at ambient temperature or constant external loading at elevated temperatures. Geometric nonlinearities and thermal-expansion effects are considered. A series of programs were developed based on these formulations. To verify the accuracy and efficiency of the nonlinear finite element programs, numerical benchmark tests were performed, and the results from these tests are in a good agreement with the literature. The effects of the nonlinear terms of the stiffness matrices on the computational results were investigated in detail. It was also demonstrated that the influence of geometric nonlinearities on the incremental steps of the finite element analysis for plane steel frames in the presence of fire is limited.

Pareto lexicographic α-robust approach and its application in robust multi objective assembly line balancing

Robustness in most of the literature is associated with min-max or min-max regret criteria. However, these criteria of robustness are conservative and therefore recently new criteria called, lexicographic α-robust method has been introduced in literature which defines the robust solution as a set of solutions whose quality or jth largest cost is not worse than the best possible jth largest cost in all scenarios. These criteria might be significant for robust optimization of single objective optimization problems. However, in real optimization problems, two or more than two conflicting objectives are desired to optimize concurrently and solution of multi objective optimization problems exists in the form of a set of solutions called Pareto solutions and from these solutions it might be difficult to decide which Pareto solution can satisfy min-max, min-max regret or lexicographic α-robust criteria by considering multiple objectives simultaneously. Therefore, lexicographic α-robust method which is a recently introduced method in literature is extended in the current research for Pareto solutions. The proposed method called Pareto lexicographic α-robust approach can define Pareto lexicographic α-robust solutions from different scenarios by considering multiple objectives simultaneously. A simple example and an application of the proposed method on a simple problem of multi objective optimization of simple assembly line balancing problem with task time uncertainty is presented to get their robust solutions. The presented method can be significant to implement on different multi objective robust optimization problems containing uncertainty.

Target-oriented robust optimization of a microgrid system investment model

An emerging alternative solution to address energy shortage is the construction of a microgrid system. This paper develops a mixed-integer linear programming microgrid investment model considering multi-period and multi-objective investment setups. It further investigates the effects of uncertain demand by using a target-oriented robust optimization (TORO) approach. The model was validated and analyzed by subjecting it in different scenarios. As a result, it is seen that there are four factors that affect the decision of the model: cost, budget, carbon emissions, and useful life. Since the objective of the model is to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the system, the model would choose to prioritize the least cost among the different distribution energy resources (DER). The effects of load uncertainty was observed through the use of Monte Carlo simulation. As a result, the deterministic model shows a solution that might be too optimistic and might not be achievable in real life situations. Through the application of TORO, a profile of solutions is generated to serve as a guide to the investors in their decisions considering uncertain demand. The results show that pessimistic investors would have lower NPV targets since they would invest more in storage facilities, incurring more electricity stock out costs. On the contrary, an optimistic investor would tend to be aggressive in buying electricity generating equipment to meet most of the demand, however risking more storage stock out costs.

A novel finite element formulation for static bending analysis of functionally graded porous sandwich

摘要: This article aims to propose a finite element formulation based on Quasi-3D theory for the static bending analysis of functionally graded porous (FGP) sandwich plates. The FGP sandwich plates consist of three layers including the bottom skin of homogeneous metal, the top skin of fully ceramic and the FGP core layer with uneven porosity distribution. A quadrilateral (Q4) element with nine degrees of freedom (DOFs) per node is derived and employed in analyzing the static bending response of the plate under uniform and/or sinusoidally distributed loads. The accuracy of the present finite element formulation is verified by comparing the obtained numerical results with the published results in the literature. Then, some numerical examples are performed to examine the effects of the parameters including power-law index k and porosity coefficient ξ on the static bending response of rectangular FGP sandwich plates. In addition, a problem with a complicated L-shape model is conducted to illustrate the superiority of the proposed finite element method.

摘要: This article describes the development of an flexure-based micromanipulator, with the features of decoupled kinematic structure, large motion range, high positioning precision, and fast response. The large motion range of flexure mechanisms is quantified by a given definition. Based on the given definition, large motion is achieved in the mechanical design of the -flexure parallel mechanism (FPM). To ensure high positioning precision and fast dynamic response, a hybrid control algorithm with both position control and vibration control are designed, using the H -theory. The controller strongly solves the three common problems of flexure mechanisms simultaneously, including unmodeled uncertainties, the external disturbances and vibration caused by inherent low damping.

Shape design of arch dams under load uncertainties with robust optimization

摘要: Due to an increased need in hydro-electricity, water storage, and flood protection, it is assumed that a series of new dams will be build throughout the world. The focus of this paper is on the non-probabilistic-based design of new arch-type dams by applying means of robust design optimization (RDO). This type of optimization takes into account uncertainties in the loads and in the material properties of the structure. As classical procedures of probabilistic-based optimization under uncertainties, such as RDO and reliability-based design optimization (RBDO), are in general computationally expensive and rely on estimates of the system’s response variance, we will not follow a full-probabilistic approach but work with predefined confidence levels. This leads to a bi-level optimization program where the volume of the dam is optimized under the worst combination of the uncertain parameters. As a result, robust and reliable designs are obtained and the result is independent from any assumptions on stochastic properties of the random variables in the model. The optimization of an arch-type dam is realized here by a robust optimization method under load uncertainty, where hydraulic and thermal loads are considered. The load uncertainty is modeled as an ellipsoidal expression. Comparing with any traditional deterministic optimization method, which only concerns the minimum objective value and offers a solution candidate close to limit-states, the RDO method provides a robust solution against uncertainty. To reduce the computational cost, a ranking strategy and an approximation model are further involved to do a preliminary screening. By this means, the robust design can generate an improved arch dam structure that ensures both safety and serviceability during its lifetime.

Reliability-based robust design optimization of vehicle components, Part I: Theory

The reliability-based design optimization, the reliability sensitivity analysis and robust design method are employed to present a practical and effective approach for reliability-based robust design optimization of vehicle components. A procedure for reliability-based robust design optimization of vehicle components is proposed. Application of the method is illustrated by reliability-based robust design optimization of axle and spring. Numerical results have shown that the proposed method can be trusted to perform reliability-based robust design optimization of vehicle components.

Analytical approach to robust design of nonlinear mechanical systems

摘要: The robustness of mechanical systems is influenced by various factors. Their effects must be understood for designing robust systems. This paper proposes a model for describing the relationships among functional requirements, structural characteristics, design parameters and uncontrollable variables of nonlinear systems. With this model, the sensitivity of systems was analyzed to formulate a system sensitivity index and robust sensitivity matrix to determine the importance of the factors in relation to the robustness of systems. Based on the robust design principle, an optimization model was developed. Combining this optimization model and the Taguchi method for robust design, an analysis was carried out to reveal the characteristics of the systems. For a nonlinear mechanical system, relationships among structural characteristics of the system, design parameters, and uncontrollable variables can be formulated as a mathematical function. The characteristics of the system determine how design parameters affect the functional requirements of the system. Consequently, they affect the distribution of system performance functions. Nonlinearity of the system can facilitate the selection of design parameters to achieve the required functional requirements.

Reliability-based robust design optimization of vehicle components, Part II: Case studies

摘要:

The reliability-based optimization, the reliability-based sensitivity analysis and robust design method are employed to propose an effective approach for reliability-based robust design optimization of vehicle components in Part I. Applications of the method are further discussed for reliability-based robust optimization of vehicle components in this paper. Examples of axles,torsion bar, coil and composite springs are illustrated for numerical investigations. Results have shown the proposed method is an efficient method for reliability-based robust design optimization of vehicle components.

Two-stage stochastic programming with robust constraints for the logistics network post-disruption response

摘要: Logistics networks (LNs) are essential for the transportation and distribution of goods or services from suppliers to consumers. However, LNs with complex structures are more vulnerable to disruptions due to natural disasters and accidents. To address the LN post-disruption response strategy optimization problem, this study proposes a novel two-stage stochastic programming model with robust delivery time constraints. The proposed model jointly optimizes the new-line-opening and rerouting decisions in the face of uncertain transport demands and transportation times. To enhance the robustness of the response strategy obtained, the conditional value at risk (CVaR) criterion is utilized to reduce the operational risk, and robust constraints based on the scenario-based uncertainty sets are proposed to guarantee the delivery time requirement. An equivalent tractable mixed-integer linear programming reformulation is further derived by linearizing the CVaR objective function and dualizing the infinite number of robust constraints into finite ones. A case study based on the practical operations of the JD LN is conducted to validate the practical significance of the proposed model. A comparison with the rerouting strategy and two benchmark models demonstrates the superiority of the proposed model in terms of operational cost, delivery time, and loading rate.

Distributionally robust optimization of home energy management system based on receding horizon optimization

摘要: This paper investigates the scheduling strategy of schedulable load in home energy management system (HEMS) under uncertain environment by proposing a distributionally robust optimization (DRO) method based on receding horizon optimization (RHO-DRO). First, the optimization model of HEMS, which contains uncertain variable outdoor temperature and hot water demand, is established and the scheduling problem is developed into a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) by using the DRO method based on the ambiguity sets of the probability distribution of uncertain variables. Combined with RHO, the MILP is solved in a rolling fashion using the latest update data related to uncertain variables. The simulation results demonstrate that the scheduling results are robust under uncertain environment while satisfying all operating constraints with little violation of user thermal comfort. Furthermore, compared with the robust optimization (RO) method, the RHO-DRO method proposed in this paper has a lower conservation and can save more electricity for users.

Controlling interstory drift ratio profiles via topology optimization strategies

摘要: An approach to control the profiles of interstory drift ratios along the height of building structures via topology optimization is proposed herein. The theoretical foundation of the proposed approach involves solving a min–max optimization problem to suppress the maximum interstory drift ratio among all stories. Two formulations are suggested: one inherits the bound formulation and the other utilizes a p-norm function to aggregate all individual interstory drift ratios. The proposed methodology can shape the interstory drift ratio profiles into inverted triangular or quadratic patterns because it realizes profile control using a group of shape weight coefficients. The proposed formulations are validated via a series of numerical examples. The disparity between the two formulations is clear. The optimization results show the optimal structural features for controlling the interstory drift ratios under different requirements.
